And so the story ends.

We got fired. Thats about it. It was really pretty lame too, we didn't even get a meeting, we got an email. How lame is that? So tomorrow, when you are sitting there at your job, notice I didn't say work (work would imply that you do something), you can read this email again. Maybe you can even forward it on to a bunch of people who don't care. I look at it this way though: the other guys and I are moving on to bigger and better thing because we are skilled in what we do; any idiot can just show up to his job everyday.

Pat, Ryan, Jim, and Phil --

After much consideration and consultation with both Jeremy Mlazovsky and Tom Skill, I have decided to officially terminate your positions as student staff for the Educational IT Operations group. (This does not affect any work that you may be doing with other units within UDit.) This was a difficult decision, as you have all played key roles in the development and success of the student initiative, as well as many other projects. However, I feel it's become necessary to make some changes that will allow us to move in a new direction. My decision is based on two main factors:

1) The original intent of your positions was to assist Jeremy in supporting the Student Computer Initiative and the faculty and staff located in the LTC. Both of these projects have evolved and expanded, and it's become apparent to me that we really need to have a student support staff with a stable work schedule. Thus, I've decided to pursue hiring two co-op students who can work more hours and take on more longer-term projects. This decision, of course, diminishes my need -- and my budget -- for part-time student staff.

2) In looking through budget records, none of you have worked many (or even any) hours since late November. I realize this may be partly due to our trying to transition you to project-based work, but I've not heard any uproar over lack of hours. I'm assuming that you have been able to find positions with more hours and/or more pay elsewhere.

There are a few "housekeeping" items that we need to take care of -- I'd like to have this done by March 22 (before you leave for Spring Break). If you absolutely can not accomplish these items by March 22, please let me know and I'll try to assist you in making other arrangements.

You all have notebooks that belong to the University in your possession. These notebooks need to be returned to either me or Jeremy after you've had an opportunity to remove any personal data that you may have stored on them. Documents, data, applications, etc. that were developed as "work product" (i.e., as part of your job) should remain on the notebooks.
You should remove any personal documents or data residing on your work machines here in Albert Emanuel and/or Roesch Library. Again, documents, data, applications, etc. that were developed as "work product" should remain on these systems. If you have any other items that belong to UD and were distributed through this office -- software, books, tools, pagers, wireless cards, etc. -- these items need to be returned as well.
Any UD limited-license software that you've installed on your own personal machines -- such as DreamWeaver, Fireworks, Axialis, etc. -- needs to be removed from your system.
As a last step, you will need to turn in your keys for Albert Emanuel and/or Roesch Library.

I'd like for you to turn items in to a live person versus just leaving them in AE 002 so we can verify who has turned in what. If you can't make it down here during the day when Jeremy and I are in, please drop things off with the LTC Night Manager (Stephanie Irwin) or one of the students at the Front Desk. It would be great if you would include your name with everything that you turn in.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me or stop by my office. I wish you all the best as you pursue other opportunities and finish out your coursework here at UD.
