"Most wired college in Ohio" tied up
I came across this in today's issue of the Flyer Liar; it is an article written by a freshman computer engineer who does a good job of addressing the problems with our network. It is well worth a read and it will be very interesting how the "administration", or should I say the people who are in charge of the network, will respond.

This has been an ongoing stuggle between students who want a reliable and quick network and the network "administrators." Since the merger of ACTS and ATS in 2000 network stability in some areas has definitely increased. Much of this can be attributed to the hard work of people over in Miriam, but there still is a lot of work to be done. Good job guys, we know you are fighting an uphill battle. I think we all know that you are as only as stong as your weakest link(s). With any luck, maybe those weak links will go away soon. In the meantime, firewall guys: maybe you should buy a book or call someone who knows. Win2k server admin: please read a book.

This letter is in response to the article "UD most wired college in Ohio," which made me proud to be a UD student, since my decision to attend UD was partly based on that fact.

On the other hand, however, some features of the network do make me wonder. For example, it is impossible to alter network settings on individual computers to be able to share files/printers with other clients. This would be something very useful in a triple room with only one printer and is usually no problem, but for some reason it is not available on the UD network.

Another concern is the minimal bandwidth/download speed present through file sharing programs like morpheus. This is possibly due to the UD firewall, and it should be fixed to enable students to download documents at a faster rate than .2 kbits/sec, which is much slower than an old 28.8K modem.

Along with these main issues there are still several minor flaws. For example, the UD internal Web sites are defined by a poor design and some are even completely down. It has been impossible to access the students' financial statements on the bursar's page for months now.
The most and best-wired college in Ohio should be able to do a better job than that.

I'm not agreeing with everything here, but there is clearly a jist of some big problems, be it network or otherwise.
