Sony BMG, Continued
Some new developments have come out in the article Tool posted a few days ago.

To reiterate: some Sony BMG CDs now come with a DRM scheme which leaves your computer extremely vulnerable to Trojans. Trying to uninstall it yourself will render your CD drive unusable. Using Sony's uninstaller will open up even more security holes. And now, the plot has gotten even thicker.

It seems that Sony (or rather, the people who developed the XCP software for them) is in fact guilty of copyright violation! The Register has the story.

For anyone who hasn't yet figured it out the lesson they should learn from this fiasco, I'm going to summarize it as succinctly as I can:

DO NOT BUY AN XCP-PROTECTED CD

It will hose your computer, and trying to unhose it will hose it worse. Additionally, you will be supporting Sony's blatant violation of all kinds of consumer rights. Sony has published a list of titles that carry this protection. The bottom line: Don't buy them. Just don't.

Yeah, the gov't is really unhappy with this one. Due to the idiots at Sony BMG, the DOD has instructed that music cds are not allowed to be used in government (at least, military) PCs. Man, Sony is going to get it where the sun doesn't shine for this one.
