Sunset Beach, NC
UPDATE: The pictures I took are now posted. There's not a lot for the last couple days, because my camera's battery died ... hopefully we'll get ahold of the ones Kara and Martin took as well.

As many of you have heard, and some of you experienced, crazyfarts.com recently participated in a trip to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, sponsored by the Gorney family. We had a pretty good time, and I took a bunch of pictures. Unfortunately, I am now back at home on a 56k dial-up connection, so uploading said pictures is a little on the inconceivable side of impractical until I can get to Jim's house and use his cable modem. So, you'll just have to be patient for those. However, to tide everybody over, I thought I'd post a brief run-down of the trip from my perspective.

On Wednesday, May 14 (two days after my birthday), I departed from my home in sunny Toledo to meet up with Ryan and co. at his house in Cleveland. Phil, Ryan and Kara were already there and Martin showed up the next morning around eight, and soon after that we were on our way. We caravanned to Columbus; Phil alone in his van, followed by Ryan and Kara in her car, then by Martin and me in his car. We met up with Katie Compton at the Fouty's house in Columbus, and the group was complete. We consolidated into Phil's van and spent the rest of the day driving, arriving at the house in Sunset about 10:30pm. Once we got there, after bringing all our stuff into the house, we went to the beach to point flashlights at the sand crabs and watch them lick their eyeballs. It was great fun. The next day, the official vacation started.

Day 1: To appease the girls, we drove into Myrtle for some shopping. Along the way, Ryan noticed signs for a winery called La Belle Amie, and decided we should stop there. We each tasted five wines for two dollars (it being illegal in NC to dispense alcohol for free), served by a flamingly homosexual and very funny bartender who singlehandedly consumed as much wine during the tasting as all of us combined. After that, we continued to the shopping center, where we sort of putzed around and mostly didn't really buy anything. That night we had really good chicken for dinner.

Day 2: Today was beach day. Most of us got up between ten and eleven and thought the weather looked promising. We had some sort of breakfast and then proceeded to the beach. By the time we got there it was pretty overcast, but we made the best of it, laying around and playing some frisbee. I went swimming, as did Katie, but everyone else was too big of pussies. We walked to Bird Island, the nudist colony, but didn't see any naked people (except for ourselves, as the soon-to-be-uploaded photos will reveal). Martin got a lot of sun that day. That night, we played Clue, and Ryan made up rules. Martin also allegedly lied to Kara about his cards, causing the game to last a very long time. Dinner was grill food - burgers and hot dogs. The leftovers went into the crab traps, where they caught more crabs than any other bait we used.

Day 3: Fishing day! We all got up at 6:00 to head into town, where we met up with a fishing boat called the Hurricane II for a four-hour deep-sea fishing trip. On the way out to the fishing spot, Phil seemed sort of grumpy, and we figured he was going to be seasick. But, in an upset that left us talking for days, it turned out to be Martin (who was starting to resemble a boiled lobster) who puked. He claims he wasn't feeling well when he got up, but we know that he's really just a wimp. We caught eight or nine seabass, in addition to a boston mackeral (reeled in by me!) and had them filleted by the Fish Filleting Guy for dinner that night. When we got back, Katie wasn't feeling well, and she ended up going to the hospital for some kidney problems - the big downer of the trip. Fortunately, they gave her some medicine that fixed her up. The fish that night were very good, and we also had shrimp alfredo.

Day 4: The weather again looked nice in the morning, so we quickly packed up and headed down to the beach. Naturally, by the time we got there, it looked like it was going to rain. After laying around and playing some frisbee again, we went for a walk, this time in the other direction. The tide was out so far that we were almost able to walk to the mainland, but no one wanted to swim the measly hundred yards across the part that was still too deep to walk. I collected some seashells. Later that day, we went to another winery called Silver Coast. It was much more reserved than La Belle Amie, but good nonetheless. We ate that night at a restaurant called Duffy's, where you get a bowl of peanuts for the table and throw the shells on the floor. That night when we came back, we watched a CBS special on how Hitler came to power.

Day 5: The weather promised to be shitty (again) so we drove back into Myrtle for lunch and some putt-putt. No one wanted to eat at McDonald's, so we went to Pizza Hut. Unfortunately, the lunch buffet was over. Numerous other suggestions were made (Hardee's, Wendy's, Burger King, Food Lion grocery store), only to be rejected for one reason or another. After driving around for a good two hours, we ended up eating at Wendy's. Then we headed back towards Sunset, stopping at a really cool putt-putt course. Sadly, I didn't take any pictures of this course because my camera batteries were dead. But it was really cool. We played putt-putt for at least two hours, then headed back home to make dinner. I was feeling really awful for some reason, so I laid down for awhile. The others put on Best In Show to watch while making dinner, which was ready shortly after the movie was over. It was 11 pm when we ate - steaks and leftover pasta, very yummy. Soon after that we went to bed, and the vacation was over.

The next day, we drove back. The trip went much more quickly than the drive down a week ago, although no one seemed very talkative. A week in close quarters will do that :-) On arriving in Columbus, we went our separate ways - Phil back to Toledo, Ryan and Kara off to her house for a trip to Vegas, and Martin and I back to Cleveland, where my car was waiting for me at the Gorney residence. We got there around 9:30, shot the shit with Mrs. Gorney for a half hour or so, and were on our way.
