Nemesis (both on-screen and off)
Went to see Nemesis tonight with Jim and Cathy. I liked the movie; Jim didn't like it quite as much. It had some very cool space battle scenes. I don't really want to write about the movie though, but rather about my Nemesis who sat next to me in the theater.

Right before the movie started these two black dudes came in and squeezed past us to the two empty seats on my right. They were sort of an oxymoron: nerdy-looking black dudes. They had glasses and everything. They sat down and made some comments about the previews, which included The Core (in which the earth's core plausibly stops rotating, and we even more plausibly send a little ship to the center of the planet to start it up again) and Final Destination 2 (since the first one wasn't bad enough). Then the movie started.

These two black dudes provided an almost non-stop running commentary on the movie. I could tell from their comments that they were pretty smart, and knew a lot about Trek, but that didn't really make them any less annoying. Inexplicably, all three of us managed to ignore them for most of the movie, but during the climax I finally got fed up. I turned to the guy next to me and said, very politely, "Excuse me, could you guys please be quiet?" The guy looked at me and very matter-of-factly replied, "No."

I was sort of taken aback by this, and looked at him for a second before responding. The exchange that followed went something like this:

Jono: I said please.
Black dude: I said no.
Jono: Why not?
Black dude: What's the point? It's just a movie.
Jono: Well, the point is, you're not part of the movie.
Black dude: Neither are you.
Jono: Yes, that's why I'm sitting here quietly watching it.
Black dude: Thanks.

I was totally dumb founded, and couldn't think of anything else to say, so I just looked menacingly at the guy for a moment and then returned my attention to the movie.

The funny thing was, I think I pissed the black dude off, because, although his friend didn't shut up or really even slow down his patter, the guy I talked to didn't say another word the whole rest of the movie. He just gave me an ominous glare as we were leaving the theater. What a homo.

I just saw it tonight (I had a date in Dayton... go figure!) It was great! It couldn't touch Wrath of Khan (even though it had a lot of parallels), but it's around First Contact. I just wished that they would have tied up more of the endings. (besides Riker and Troi...) And where can I get one of those dune buggys with the phaser gun in the back? Save the Ghetto!
